The Grammar School Expands Preschool Program

The Preschool at The Grammar School has expanded its full time program for three to five year olds. In addition to the established curriculum that includes Physical Skills Development and classes with TGS librarian Ponnie Derby, students now have scheduled periods with the school’s French, art, and music teachers. One student eagerly described how teacher Johanna Gardner plays games to introduce color names in French, and another was excited to “sing a song about numbers.” Alli Lubin, music director, holds a weekly chorus where students learn about musical instruments, rhythm, and beat while they dance and march. Art teacher William Chambers offers the students a wide range of artistic projects, from making cardboard pizzas to drawing themselves in multiple mirror reflections. As a preschooler noted, “We thought we were on a big glass window on the floor, but it really was just a reflection of the ceiling!” Head teacher Ken Brautigam said that the students really enjoy the new course offerings, and from their comments it’s clear that the experience of having the specials teachers come into their classroom is a stimulating and rewarding addition to their curriculum.
