Weaving in The Third Grade

Linda Kosiba’s third grade class at The Grammar School in Putney was treated to a weaving workshop by weaver Carol Schnabel last week. Using backstrap looms made from popsicle sticks, students created colorful belts, wall hangings, and scarves, and they also had a chance to weave on Schnabel’s own floor loom. Students eagerly described the processes of weaving simples items on their individual looms and creating intricate zigzags, diamonds, and other patterns using the four harness loom.

Producing their own textiles gave students another opportunity to appreciate the craft that they have been researching this fall, first through their study of spiders, “the original weavers’” and then in the unit on the history of Vermont and New Hampshire farm life.

Reading tales about weaving in different cultures, including several versions of Rumpelstiltskin and folktales about the swan, crane, and goose further enhanced their understanding of the importance of weaving throughout history.
