Kindergartners at The Grammar School in Putney hold up birthday cards they made in tech class for the school library
The Library Birthday Party
Students at Putney’s Grammar School celebrated their school library’s 48th birthday today. This custom is as old as The Grammar School and was started as a way to acquire books. On each birthday, students may choose to bring in a brightly wrapped, signed favorite book from the library’s “wish list” and give it to the library. Preschoolers through 8th graders all come together with faculty and staff and entertain each other with literary-themed games. The TGS library currently contains over 9,000 books. Ponnie Derby has been the TGS school librarian since 1994. She recently expressed her gratitude that “TGS parents generously volunteer in the library, encourage students to use the library regularly, read with their children during the March Reading Challenge, participate in the book fair, and contribute to the library through gifts and donations.” Learning to use the library is part of the TGS curriculum and students enjoy regular Sustained Silent Reading periods as part of their studies.
