MEDIEVAL FAIRE is held every fall on the Saturday of Columbus Day weekend at TGS. The Faire is a daylong celebration, featuring medieval-themed games and activities for children, live music, and a marketplace of homemade foods. This is one of two major fundraisers of the school year and all families, faculty and staff participate either that day or in preparation. The coordinator of the event begins preparations in the spring and organizes food, games, events, and staffing during the fall. This is also a major public relations event for the school.
DESSERT THEATER is usually held in the fall to raise money for the 8th grade trip in the spring. It is held on a weekday evening and features homemade desserts and a play appropriate for all ages.
WINTER and SPRING CONCERTS are held in December and May. The Winter Concerts are held on two evenings (one each for lower and upper school students), and consist of holiday and solstice vocal and instrumental music. The Spring or Maypole concert is for the K-6th grades at the end of May in the evening with a vocal and instrumental format.
POET’S DAY occurs during National Poetry Month in April. A local poet reads for an assembly during this time and all classes are involved in writing poetry.
SPRING FUNDRAISING EVENT changes venues every year but is vital to completing the annual fundraising expectations of the budget. In the past we have had auctions, author evenings and celebrity events. The event usually takes place on a Friday or Saturday evening in mid-May and is for adults. You will begin hearing about this sometime after Christmas and will be asked to participate in some way.
GRANDPARENT (FRIEND) DAY usually happens the 2nd Friday in May. This is a time when grandparents are invited to the school to attend class with their grandchildren. For those children who don’t have local or available grandparents they are encouraged to bring a “grandfriend.” The event usually lasts all morning. Grandparents are entertained in the classrooms, at recess, at a coffee hosted by the Chair of the Board and Head of School, and in an assembly by the students.
WORK DAYS happen before school starts, generally in August and May. This helps maintain the school. It is usually held on a Saturday morning and includes lunch. This is for the whole family.
LIBRARY BIRTHDAY PARTY is an event as old as TGS. It was first started to acquire books for our library. The original idea was for each child to bring in a brightly wrapped, signed favorite book and give it to the library. Today the librarian circulates a list of desired books and those who wish can purchase a requested book to give to the library. Students entertain one another with literary-themed games, and the event culminates with cupcakes for all.
7TH AND 8TH GRADE MUSICAL is held in April or May on four consecutive evenings. All 7th and 8th graders participate in the musical, and it is an exceptional effort enjoyed by all the students, their families and the community. Recent productions include Oklahoma, Grease, Into the Woods, and Bye-Bye Birdie. This effort takes about 2 months to put together and requires parental support and outside help.
GRADUATION is usually held during the second week of June. It is a major event for the entire school community and usually lasts for a couple of hours. After an opening reception, each graduating student is honored in a singular speech given by an adult of his or her choosing. The whole school is invited to this early evening event. Each graduating class chooses the details of the event, creating a unique celebration of the class.
